The VPST project brings virtual technology to Finnish Lapland for northern partners.

WHAT IT IS

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT INTO NORTHERN FINLAND

ERDF funded VPST project brings the first virtual production studio to northern Finland. The studio will be build around LED-screen complex with cameras and motion capture technology. Virtual productions work as a way to unite the real world and the virtual world with virtual cameras, motion capture, game engine built environments and a high tech LED wall. The VPST project brings this technology to Lapland and closer to northern partners.

Project collaborators: Lapland UAS and University of Lapland.

Project is funded by EU.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

THE VPST PROJECT

The purpose of the VPST project is to build a virtual production studio based on LED screens for the joint use of the Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland. Virtual production and related technology are tested and piloted in various work packages during the project. Within the work packages, free workshops on the topics of virtual production are held for everyone interested. (Hox. The workshops are only held in Finnish!)

Schedule:

1/08/2023-31/12/2025

Organizations:

Lapland University of Applied Sciences (head organizer) and University of Lapland.

Budget & Funding:

The total budget of the VPST project is 1 231 143€ and the budget for the investment project alongside it is 478 573€. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

virtual production studio

THE vpst studio

The studio will be build during the autumn of 2024 into the facilities of the University of Lapland. It enables real time motion capture along with creating and manipulating sets and environments, from streamed live broadcasts and performances to film level productions. The studio wall consists of LED screens, which can be used to reproduce various backgrounds and video lighting for use in virtual productions. The total size of the studio wall will be 6 x 3 meters. The studio will also include camera systems and other equipment suitable for virtual production.

Along with the studio, a test environment will be built in the premises of FrostBit laboratory of Lapland UAS, which will be used to test virtual environments and productions for studio use.
